Lithium-ion battery storage containers and manufacturing spaces require special hazard fire suppression systems to protect against the dangerous possibility of thermal runway.
What is Thermal Runway?
Lithium-ion batteries are charged and discharged to meet demands for power from the grid. This energy flow in and out of the batteries creates heat. If there are manufacturing defects in a battery, a short can occur, resulting in thermal runway.
Thermal runway occurs when a battery increases in temperature and causes a further increase in temperature in the battery cells around it. Fires in these batteries have the potential to become extremely dangerous and can reignite hours or days later due to thermal runway.
Fire Suppression Systems
Due to the dangers of thermal runway, it is especially important for lithium-ion batteries to have specialized fire suppression systems that are efficient and effective at suppressing fires. Some fire suppression systems used in these spaces include:
- Inert gas systems
- Novec fire suppression
- Water mist systems
- Clean agent fire suppression
Early detection of a fire is important in lithium-ion battery storage and manufacturing spaces. Some detection systems that are effective in these areas include:
- Li-Ion Tamer early warning off gas detection systems
- VESDA smoke detection
