Hydrostatic Testing of Fire Extinguishers

Just like any other component of a fire protection system, fire extinguishers need to be regularly inspected and tested to ensure that there are no defects and make sure the extinguisher will perform well when it is discharged.

What is Hydrostatic Testing?

Hydrostatic testing of a fire extinguisher is performed every twelve years to test for weaknesses and deformities in the extinguisher. During a hydrostatic test, the extinguisher is filled with water and pressurized to a pressure that is higher than normal. The extinguisher is kept at this high pressure for a specified amount of time and is inspected for leaks and deformities.

Hydrostatic tests are performed on ABC extinguishers that are rechargeable, not for extinguishers that are one-time use. The label on the extinguisher will specify whether the fire extinguisher is for one time use or rechargeable.

Steps of a Hydrostatic Test

  1. Visual inspection
  2. Hose removal
  3. Discharge
  4. Valve removal
  5. Pressure testing
  6. Drain, Clean and Dry the Cylinder
  7. Reassemble the Extinguisher

How Often Should My Extinguisher Be Inspected?

Fire extinguishers need regular inspections, testing and service to ensure that they are ready to use. In order to remain compliant with NFPA standards, building owners should visually inspect extinguishers on a monthly basis. Monthly visual inspections check for any visible signs of damage and make sure they are easily accessible.

Fire extinguishers also need yearly inspections performed by a technician. During an annual inspection, the extinguisher is visually inspected, and the tamper seal is removed.  The pull pin is then tested. After testing the pull pin, a new tamper seal is installed.

Hydrostatic tests are performed every 12 years in addition to annual and monthly inspections.
